x Marc We just finished this set of discs. On the heels of Inland Empire, it was interesting to see something that was so based on early Lynch. This is very much in the mold of Twin Peaks - the groundbreaking series from 16 years ago.

It's also interesting to note how passé some things are, that used to be 'edgy'. In fact, it's difficult for the writers to keep the air of shock and bizarrity (not a word) going...

I need something to watch these days, and there's nothing wrong with the acting, and the setting (a very odd traveling carnival durin the depression in the US) is historically interesting, and it looks fantastic, big and complex.

In the end, though, it comes off as a very large and pretty ant farm populated by humans.

Don't get me wrong, I'll be watching season 2 this fall...

And then... this winter.... The Sopranos...

x Jess I've heard about this and it sounds interesting, but kind of depressing because I had an idea of writing a book along a similar vein. *sigh*

I guess there really is nothing new under the sun.

I'd still watch it anyway...

x Billy_Tascademo I think Clancy Brown was really good in it.

Now I think of him as the priest in Carnivale, as opposed to the dude in Highlander.

I think the fact that Michael J Anderson is in it might be overshadowing your appraisal of it a little...there's really very little that is similar to twin peaks in this. Both are playing with soap-opera structure in different ways, but it is that that ties them together, rather than the wierdness.

Be warned, Season II ends on a cliffhanger which is never resolved because HBO pulled the funding...

x Marc AUGH !!!!!!

We were afraid that the cliffhanger was unresolved...

We haven't seen it yet, but a lady was at the video store returning the LAST EPISODE ever made, and she was excitedly asking for the next episode....

Augh.

x Marc The dream sequences, and the story structure are twin-peaks-like, IMO

x Billy_Tascademo They were talking about doing an HBO movie to resolve the storyline, but I doubt that is going to happen.

The dream sequences go particularly crazy in season II. They ramp up the 'dark' to try and retain an audience...

x Marc Ok...

We just saw the episode where Ben meets his 'cousins' and we liked it a lot... It's too bad it was cancelled, as it's starting to flow a little better now...

Augh... I'm NOT looking forward to that cliff hanger

Maybe we'll do Deadwood next.
