x Jizz Master Zero Here is something Toronto Tasty.

You can eat like a hog at a variety of Toronto restaurants, at least until the 12th Feb. I.e., before the all important Valentine's Day.

All sorts of places have quite cheap prix fixe menus, either $10/20 for lunch, and $20/30 for dinner, which is always at least an appetizer, a main, and dessert.

It's a way to try fancy places with relatively low commitment... I used to hit up good places all the time, but that's when you START dating a person and it's all whirlwind romance and damn the cost. In a longer scene, she and I can both be pleased by a bargain nipkin

Tonight I'm trying some French place. I will probably somehow review it.

In the next few days I definitely want to try Jalapeno on King St., it's Mexican, and a Mexican friend tells me the food is actually really good there. Gourmet Mexican if such a thing... normally too expensive for his blood, but not so much now during this promo thing.

x psyklone Don't I know it.

Hey Jizz, which French restaurant are you trying? I went to Le Trou Normand a couple years ago and was pleasantly pleased with the food. Can't say the same about the service though, but nonetheless a top drawer restaurant.

x Jess I think I know that mexican place. I walk by it on my way home every nite. That must explain why it was so crowded last nite.. Didn't look like an empty seat in the house..

I'd be interested in trying that new Blowfish place sometime. It looks trés swankée lol

x Jizz Master Zero Bouchon was where I went, not too bad. 38 Wellington E., which turns out to be next door to one of my favourite fancy Italian places, Bravi.

Bouchon was okay, not sure I liked the basement atmosphere... a little bit too well lit for a basement bistro, it gives you time to realize you're sitting in the equivalent of a wood panelled rec room. Very cramped seating too, but I guess you have to cram them in to pay the rent.

I started with a Carrot Ginger soup (which was good as all such specimens tend to be). My companion had a calimari thing, it looked like an onion blossom from the Outback or something, but it was good and light.

I had beef bourginon (sp?) which I hadn't quite realized was a blade steak or similar cut in a sort of sweet red wine sauce. It reminded me of potroast, very tender, but I guess the sauce fancied it up. I was kind of shocked at how big it was. A little larger than I expected. GF had some sort of shrimp / scallop thing in a tomato fondue dressing, which I understand was good.

Both had creme brule for dessert, that was done really well.

They are still doing dinners like that for $30/person. Had a bottle of some cheap Australian Shiraz, think it was called Xanadu, it went well enough with a beef and a tomato-seafood kind of meal. I'd go back, except the menu seemed a little exotic for my tastes (i.e., the normal menu, half of it relates to duck-based poutine. I shit you not).
